SEO involves a wide variety of optimization techniques to help make your website search engine friendly. There are two main categories: on-site SEO and off-site SEO. These two processes work hand-in-hand. On-site SEO helps search engines determine what your site is about. Off-site SEO focuses on driving relevant, authoritative links and traffic from other sites back to your site. When both are working together, your site can have a stronger search engine presence and ultimately gain more business.

    Defining the terms

On-site SEO: On-site search engine optimization simply describes the process of optimizing a website for a particular keyword. This involves the strategic placement of keywords in your website code and your website content, including title tags, meta descriptions, URL structure, headers and website copy.

Off-site SEO: Off-site SEO involves acquiring links to your website from other websites on the Internet. These links are referred to as “backlinks.” Backlinks that come from websites with high authority help your website build authority. There are several ways you can acquire backlinks.

    Acquiring Backlinks

As an SEO company, we constantly work to create organic backlinks for our clients. We have listed just a few ideas for creating them organically below.

    • Write relevant, helpful content and place it on social sharing sites like HubPages.com or Squidoo.com.
    • Write articles related to your industry and submit them to sites such as GoArticles.com.
    • Submit your site to relevant online directories.
    • Maintain a blog on your website and share your blog content in social media networks. This may encourage people to share your links and even include them in their own website.
In addition to backlinks, Google now considers your website’s social authority when determining rankings. Actively engaging in social networks can help your website’s social authority. An example of this would be having a Facebook page for your website. Building social authority has become an additional form of off-site SEO. You can learn more about building social authority through Facebook in our previous blog post, “How to Actually Engage on Facebook.”

What is more important: On-site or Off-site SEO?

Both on-site and off-site SEO are important. However, we suggest implementing on-site optimization before concentrating on off-site. The ultimate goal of these SEO tactics is to increase visitors to your company website.
