Google Wants a Whole Site

The greatest difficulty I have is explaining to clients the “Whole Site Concept” that Google currently is looking for. It’s hard for an established business that has been on the Internet for over 10 years to understand this shift. In the old days (some may say better days), one just needed to put up a basic site and create as many product/category pages as possible to be successful. Each time someone put on a new product page, they would see it appear in the search engines. It might not be on page one, but they could at least find it. …

What’s Tumblr Good For?

A few years ago, I assumed Tumblr was a second-class blogging platform that looked and worked inferior to WordPress. I’ve now realized I was being pretty close-minded to any Content Management System (CMS) but WordPress, whether for a personal blog or a business website. That has now changed. Recently, I started helping my best friend establish himself as an influencer in preparation for a future online entertainment venture. So, I did what I always do when I am excited about a new project. I snapped up a URL and started furiously looking for an awesome WordPress theme. At the same …

The Importance of Google+ Local Pages

They say the only thing you can count on is change. This is definitely true of Google. One of their recent changes replaced Google Places pages with Google+ Local pages. This is an important change for local businesses. Don’t worry, if you already had your Google Places page set up, that information has been transferred to your Google+ Local page. However, Google+ Local offers more features than you experienced with Google Places. The biggest change? Because Local is part of the Google+ social network, Local pages are built to be much more social.

Why No-Contract and Guaranteed SEO Are Bad Ideas

Beware of SEO companies that don’t require a contract and/or guarantee you successful results. It’s seems like a good idea at first. There will be no contract involved and the SEO company will “work” for you for free until they achieve your rankings. So you might think, “I must have nothing to lose.” That couldn’t be further from the truth. Your website, like your reputation, is something you should protect and something you can never get back once it is tarnished.  Here’s why offers of no contract or guaranteed SEO are bad for your company.   No Contract.   No …

The Dangers of Over-Linking

Do you want to know why RankPay.com, which was #1 for the keyword “SEO Services” on Google for over a year, is now on page three for that term? How about NationalPositions.com, who was #1 for “SEO Company” until several months ago when they also plummeted to page two? Did they all of a sudden start doing black hat link building? No. So, what would cause such a steep decline from #1 to oblivion? Over-linking.   This is a topic that is scary for SEO companies to talk about because they don’t want their clients to think there is an …

Location-Based Apps Based on Emotion

Location-based mobile tools such as Foursquare are not yet considered mainstream social media channels. Still, Foursquare has nearly 10 million users world-wide, so it’s a marketing channel that businesses shouldn’t dismiss. Recently, I was speaking with a friend who uses Foursquare multiple times a day. I asked him why he uses it, and his answer was, “Funny you should ask. I ask myself that frequently, too.” Right then I knew I had the basis for our next blog post. I wanted to get answers to these questions: Why do people use check-in apps? What motivates people to check in to a …

Do Apps Like Foursquare Affect SEO?

Yes, apps like Foursquare can affect SEO. Each venue on Foursquare has a dedicated Web page that is indexed by Google. Therefore, your Foursquare page could rank for geographic related searches just like your Google Places page or your Yelp profile. Additionally, as with those location-based directories, your business could be on Foursquare right now without you even knowing it. If it is, you should claim your Foursquare page ASAP so that you can optimize it and monitor it. If your venue is not already on Foursquare, it’s a good idea for you to add and populate it so that …

Is Google Plus Worth It?

The answer for most businesses is a definitive “YES.”You should probably be using Google Plus.   There is one incredibly important benefit Google Plus gives you: Google indexes Google Plus posts. They do not index Facebook or Twitter posts.   Why is this important? If your Google Plus posts are SEO friendly, and include good content, it’s possible that your Google Plus posts could show up in search results. In fact, if you are very active on Google Plus, your posts might even start popping up in results before your website – or your competitors’ websites. Right now, there’s a …

Google Search Plus Your World

Are you used to seeing your website appear in Google search results on the first page without scrolling? As of yesterday, you may have noticed a change. That’s because, in many searches results, Google is including Google+ comments above everything else on the page. Google is calling this search style, “Google Plus Your World.” Google’s Jack Menzel explains with an example: adobe oem software “Google+ results will be blended in with the traditional ‘authoritative [organic] results,’ but clearly annotated. Type in a topic of interest, like ‘Rome,’ and along with maps, travel info, historical references, you’ll find a post your friend …
